How You Will Be Covered

We’re going to start by looking at what kinds of expenses would be covered under a Medicare Advantage plan. These plans have tons of coverage, and it starts by covering all of Medicare Part A and Part B. If you know much about Medicare insurance plans, then you already know that this covers you for all of Original Medicare. But the Advantage plans go further than that. They also cover you for urgently needed healthcare as well as for emergency care.

Now, Medicare Advantage is only sold by private insurances. These are companies that often sell all sorts of medical insurance plans as well as other types of insurance, in some cases. Medicare allows them to sell some of its plans, but they have to follow Medicare’s rules for coverage. Medicare dictates that all of its Advantage plans, no matter who is selling them and what state they are being sold in, must have the basic coverage we have listed above.

However, those companies are allowed to customize the coverage in a lot of different ways. They can add on more coverage and set their own prices based on that coverage. They could add in coverage for Medicare Part D, and that would take care of a lot of prescription drug costs for subscribers. They can also add coverage for annual checkups for things like hearing, vision and general wellness. If you had all that overage, on top of the basic coverage, you would have few medical expenses to pay out of pocket.

The insurance companies can add as much or as little of these items as they want. Most of them will include the Part D coverage, and that’s considered pretty much industry standard, but you do need to pay attention to what is actually included in the plan you are considering signing up for.

How Much It Costs

So, how much will you pay for AARP Medicare Advantage Plans in 2018 and the coverage they offer you? It’s a fair question, and unfortunately, we can’t tell you what all the insurance companies charge, because there are just so many of them. Besides, the prices change costly, usually at about the rate of once per year. That’s a lot price changes to keep up with. You’ll want to make sure your information is correct when you go to compare prices and find the best deal. You wan to be sure that you aren’t looking at out of date prices or coverage that is not relevant to that particular plan anymore.

You will pay for the Part B deductible, though, which is $183 right now. You can be covered for that only through Supplement plans, really, and your Advantage plan would still leave that for you to pay. You’ll also have to pay any copayments required for Part A and Part B of Medicare. Plus, the Advantage plan has its own premiums, and those may change after your term has signed up.

How to Get Signed Up

When you sign up for a Medicare plan, you choose the term you want. You can choose to stay signed up for a full year, which is usually the minimum. Or you could go for a few years at a time. The advantage to opting for several years at once is that you may be able to lock in the rates and the coverage on your plan, and that can save you money in the long run.

Once you meet those basic requirements, you are eligible for most Medicare plans, whether you are buying them from Medicare directly or from a private insurance company. You may be able to qualify for Advantage coverage and Medicare before age 65. That depends on a few factors, such as your health condition and your income. Certain health conditions may exempt you from eligibly for any type of medical plans much as end stage renal disease.

If you are not sure if you qualify or if you would be approved if you applied, then you need to talk to an insurance agent about eligibility. It costs nothing to apply, and if you are rejected one year, you can always apply the next year.

If you sign up driving Open Enrollment, then you are guaranteed the plan of your choice. This takes place once a year, around the end of the year. You will find that the dates can change from year to year, so make sure you find out when Open Enrollment is for the upcoming year before you try to sign up. That will be your best window to sign up.

You should be careful about which of the AARP Medicare Advantage Plans for 2018 you sign up for. Not all of them will be a good fit for you, and you’ll need to know what your medical coverage needs are before you can pick the right kind of plan.
